Week 1

My flight left for Minneapolis at 5 in the morning, and I was obviously quite tired by the time I made it to my dorm around 10 local time on Sunday. Monday morning the members of the REU group were all introduced to each other and given a tour of St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) where we learned more about the individual projects we would be undertaking throughout the summer. On Tuesday we left for Cloquet, Minnesota, and spent Tuesday through Thursday on an Ojibwe reservation mentoring younger kids at a science camp. This was an unexpected experience for many of us, but I think it contributed heavily to our group becoming fast friends. Friday I met my advisor, Dr. Kimberly Hill, and learned more about my summer research project and so far this weekend some of the other students and I have gotten a chance to explore the Dinkytown area of Minneapolis.
